Creature of Habit
I have a box in the wardrobe full of the keep sakes that I have collected over the last 20 years list, notes, journals and photographs. My son wanted to see my old pictures recently, it is funny because I can remember doing the same with my Dad who had a draw with similar bits a bobs.
Sharing the pictures with him was fun and seeing my fresh face gives the incredible sense of journey, less hair in some place and more in others.
I found a diary from 2003 the year after Keelan was born It was bought as a tool for a writing project and never used, ( keelan is now busy booking coaching appointments in it for all of his toys ) trapped in the pages was and old till receipt from the supermarket.
What a revelation, I am now paying 1penny less for Bananas than I was 6 years ago and double the price for carrots, however I am still buying the same things. What does that say about me, I am a creature of habit or a boring 40 something shopper.
I guess there will be some stats somewhere that would show how buying patterns once set are difficult to change. I expect what we start buying in out 20s we will still be buying in our 30s 40s 50s, this is the power of building a brand
What does this mean as a someone in business?
It means you have got to work hard to break your customers out of their comfort zone and change the behavour in your direction, however there are opportunities when other events move the ground for you. The change in the world economy has touched everyone and all consumers are revaluating spending habits. Food buying will not change much, eating out will, new cars, houses and kitchen will take an extra push.
What about you the entrepreneur what are you doing to create that extra push, are you stuck in old habbits are you doing the same marketing that you were last year, now is the time to shake out the old and take on the new.
I suggest that you look at the following
- How much are you spending on sales and marketing
- What is working and do you have the testing processes in place to know
- How many marketing channels are you using
What am I doing that is different
This time last year I was not blogging, facebooking or twittering has it made a difference yes, it keeps me thinking and evaluating where I am in my development what values I bring to my clients. I keep my clients aware that I am still here, it brings in new enquiries from people who like what I have to say.
I am doing more speaking and presentation, I and running more events for nitch groups, I have started to look at local advertising linked to on line follow up. Its exciting stuff, let me know what are you doing differntly?
All the best to you and your business
Paul Harvey
